Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Do you have skills but no certificate?

At Kitutu Masaba Technical & Vocational College, we support the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative, by enabling individuals to transform their informal, non-formal, or workplace-acquired skills into formal certification. Through RPL, you can gain credit or even full qualification aligned with the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF).

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process by which an individual’s knowledge, skills, and competencies—regardless of how, when, or where they were acquired—are assessed against national standards and learning outcomes documented in the Kenya National Qualifications Authority.

  • RPL validates learning from informal training, work experience, community service, life experience, and other non-formal settings.

  • Candidates may achieve credit toward a qualification, partial qualification, or the full qualification.

Importance of RPL

  • Promotes social inclusion by recognizing non-traditional learners and those who have not followed formal education routes.

  • Facilitates lifelong learning and career mobility: RPL supports entry, re-entry, and exit within the education system.

  • Saves time and cost: by awarding credit for existing competencies, you may skip redundant coursework.

  • Helps formalize and certify the informal economy, supporting national goals for employment and skills recognition.

RPL Assessment Fees

  • For candidates who will be assessed within Kitutu Masaba TVC facilities – Fee: KES 3,000

  • For candidates who prefer assessment at their job site – Fee: KES 1,500
